FIELDWORK OPPORTUNITIES: THE SÂNPETRU BIOARCHAEOLOGY FIELDSCHOOL *
Since 2023, members of our team collaborate with the non-profit association Terra Ultra Silvam Archaeology and with the Institute for Field Research (IFR), with the support of the Institute of Archaeology ‘V. Parvan’ and the cultural association Hieronymus to train students in the osteological analysis of medieval assemblages and archaeological excavation methods and practice in the fortified Saxon church of the Transylvanian village of Sânpetru.
Duration of the field school: 4 weeks
Field school dates: 2 sessions in 2025 (S1: June 8 – July 5/S2: July 6 – Aug. 2)
Academic credits: Yes, 8 semester (12 quarter)

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Participants will receive instruction and training in archaeological and bioarchaeological theory and practice on (but not limited to):
Archaeological excavation and recording
Ethical handling and post excavation processing of human skeletal remains from Transylvanian medieval cemeteries - cleaning, conservation and storage
Skeletal anatomy and analytical methods
Methods for interpreting the burial context and for recording bioarchaeological data
Daily activities will alternate lectures, seminars and lab and field work. Participants will also be able to enjoy and discover Transylvania on weekly fieldtrips and their own free time.
